OT & the Dentist

Sensory Link is excited to announce that we have joined with Miracle Dental Associates to provide a one-of-a-kind trip to the dentist, especially for those children with special needs.

What role does Occupational Therapy (OT) play at the dentist?

It is the goal of the Occupational Therapist to promote a positive, calm, and individualized dental experience. The OT will take into account your child’s sensory needs, and provide adaptations that the dental staff will follow on the day of the exam.

How does the process work?

  1.  You will call the office and schedule TWO different appointments, one with the OT and one for the actual dental exam.

  2. During your first visit,  the OT will evaluate and determine the needs of your child for the day of the exam. The OT will allow your child to explore the office in quiet and private space, and provide an individualized social story to your child with pictures. This appointment usually takes ~45 minutes.

  3.  One your second visit, your child will complete the dental exam with all of the recommendations from the OT in place.
